The honey bus

I found the book "The Honey Bus" to be a sad book and on the other hand a healing, comforting and life-encouraging book. Healing that we can experience in and through nature.

The author Meredith May describes in a touching way her childhood, which was not only overshadowed by the separation of her parents but was also heavily burdened by the depression of her mother, which was triggered by this and lasted for years. From one day to the next, Meredith and her brother become de facto orphans.

They are picked up by their grandparents, especially their grandfather. He is a passionate beekeeper and has dedicated his whole life to bees and their nature. In a very gentle way, he introduces the children to this subject and explains "life" and "survival" based on the behavior of bees. For example, he explains the communication of the bees through dancing or the task of the scout bees to find a new home when it seems necessary and useful. He illustrates the cohesion of the bee colony and the trust in each other. The grandfather runs his apiary in a disused old bus, which gave the book its name.

The children "survive" and, with the support of the bees, "process" their trauma. Ultimately, they find support and confidence in life in the experienced structures of the bee colonies and grow into strong personalities. The author takes care of the inheritance from the grandfather, his last colony, far beyond his death and is closely connected to the bees until today.

From my point of view, this is a very readable book, which shows that the occupation with bees is much more than just the extraction of a few kilograms of honey. If we look closely, we can all learn an infinite amount from these wonderful creatures. Let's all work to ensure that future generations have the chance to do the same.
